FROM WIND TO SHAFT

Conditions on Earth urgently require renewable energy sources such as wind power to achieve ambitious climate protection goals. And the requisite qualified education solutions are no less urgently needed. Generating electricity from wind starts with kinetic energy. Wind moves and the energy of that motion is converted to potential energy and balanced out in electrical power production. Modern wind turbines are the dominant form of wind energy exploitation. The ability to maintain the optimal interaction between the nacelle, the rotor blades and the generator doesn’t come naturally: it takes training. Some of the most modern structures include state-of-the-art offshore turbines mounted on floating platforms, but landscapes are also sprouting more and more so-called “wind farms.” 

Realistic training systems and multimedia courses accurately simulate these actual conditions, clearly illustrating the latest multi-megawatt wind turbine technologies. Along with this, there are also training courses on decentralised power generation using small wind turbines. Taken together, they turn practical education in small-to-large wind turbines into real world experience.

PRACTICAL UNDERSTANDING

The demand for sustainable technologies is constantly growing. Against this background, photovoltaics (PV) is becoming an increasingly important alternative energy source. Using a solar cell, it exploits the so-called photoelectric effect to generate electrical power from light. In technical terms, semiconductors use sunlight and its energy to produce free charge carriers. 

Solar cells achieve their full potential when linked together as solar modules in photovoltaic systems – a solar power engineering market currently experiencing exponential growth. Specifically targeted knowledge transfer here can greatly benefit not only the economy, but above all the climate itself. A growing chorus is now soliciting the use of fuel cells as a next-generation technology for electrical and mobility applications. But the technology itself is actually nothing new: As far back as 1839, William Grove described the idea of a galvanic gas battery that could use hydrogen oxidation to produce energy by “cold combustion.” The special feature of the fuel cell is its conversion method. It splits hydrogen via oxidation with oxygen, releasing an electron. This transforms the energy of the chemical reaction into electrical current and heat. 

Its particularly efficient conversion yields high power efficiency and leaves behind only water – which makes it an exceptionally eco-friendly source of energy, provided that the requisite hydrogen is produced using renewable energies.  Training and experimentation systems for fuel cell technology transfer knowledge that is essential for this market of the future. BIOENERGY

Bioenergy is generated by transforming biomass and is used in all energy-related sectors: As fuel for vehicles, for household heating, and to produce electricity and generate process heat in industry. Most of this conversion produces fuel and heat to generate electrical power. Bioenergy is available for use in different physical states. Biogenic fuel gas (biogas) is of growing importance in this context.
 Whether used in biogas-driven combined heat and power plants (CHPs) or in gas-and-steam power plants, all forms of bioenergy have one thing in common: they require technology to generate bio-electricity – technology which in turn requires specialists to develop, produce, install and operate it. HYDROELECTRIC POWER

TURNING WATER INTO ENERGY

Water power has been used as a source of energy for centuries. The invention of the first water wheel dates back to the 3rd to 4th century before Christ and marks the start of this long tradition. Ever since that time, water wheels have driven millstones, tools, implements and generators. As a result, the potential and kinetic energy of water has played a major role in the development of agriculture (irrigation), food production (grain mills), mining, craftwork and industry (power tools, material handling, and much more).
 Today water power is mainly used in run-of-river and storage power stations. Run-of-river power stations use kinetic energy supplied by the natural flow of rivers and streams. To increase that potential energy, the watercourse is usually dammed up. Storage power stations use water from water reservoirs such as man-made lakes. With this energy form in particular, efficient utilisation and knowledge of the ecosystem are especially important. This requires the optimised transfer of knowledge along the entire education chain – from experiment equipment sets to complete training systems. 

PUMPED-STORAGE PLANTS

FOR GREATER SUPPLY RELIABILITY

Pumped-storage power plants store electrical energy and then supply it again on demand. For storage purposes, the water is pumped to a higher level, thereby generating and storing potential energy. 
When the stored energy is needed, the potential energy is released by allowing the water to flow down from the height differential. Turbines convert the resulting kinetic energy (flow) into electricity. After conversion, the electrical power is fed back into the grid as needed. With the increase in regenerative energy production, pumped-storage power plants are necessary and indispensable energy storage systems in a smart grid with high supply quality.

INTELLIGENT PEAK POWER

Early morning hours are peak times for electrical power consumption. That energy consumption tracks the rhythm of our everyday life and our resulting energy needs. The actual energy requirements of the population and industry cannot be covered by the production of energy from renewable sources, so a counterbalancing element is needed: Electricity producers such as pumped-storage power plants, hydroelectric plants and other kinds of power plants such as nuclear, coal and gas-fired plants. 

When renewable energy sources are then added to the mix – supplying surplus green energy from wind power and from the sun via solar panels – then the system requires storage and “smart” flexible grid management that also takes into account smaller energy producers, private solar power installations and power generating organisations. To enable the growing share of renewable energy sources to compete with conventional power plant infrastructures, public utilities are increasingly turning to the intelligent “smart grid” as a new way of managing the power grid.
